Contract Faculty Opening at the Marron Institute

What We’re Looking For

The Marron Institute at New York University seeks to hire a contract faculty member to run its next major research program. We are looking for individuals with a desire to apply expertise to the pressing problems that cities face in a world of increasing urbanization. Successful candidates will create, build, and direct a new research program, initially with seed funding provided by the Marron Institute and ultimately drawing on external funding, particularly from sponsored research projects. Faculty positions are non-tenure and non-tenure track.

Required Qualifications

A PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline is required. Candidates should have a record of distinguished applied research contributions in an urban-related field. Candidates must have a demonstrated history of raising funds for sponsored research and experience managing teams of researchers.

We are looking to fill a faculty position in one of the following three areas:

  • Municipal finance, for example pensions, infrastructure finance, taxes, fees, and the financing of municipal services. We are interested in candidates from a wide variety of fields such as economics, law, political science, policy analysis, or public finance.
  • Urban infrastructure, such as design, financing, construction, or transportation networks. Candidates from the numerous fields that investigate urban infrastructure, e.g., engineering, social sciences, law, or urban planning, are encouraged to apply.
  • Open area, including any program of applied research that addresses problems that cities face. We are open to candidates who come from a variety of academic disciplines (e.g. engineering, health sciences, law, computer science, social sciences) and who have a variety of research interests.

What We’re Building

The Marron Institute of Urban Management (marroninstitute.nyu.edu) at New York University works with cities and other jurisdictions to improve the provision of local services and effect positive social change. We are a rapidly growing, entrepreneurial institute with a somewhat unusual organizational model for an academic setting. The Marron Institute’s first priority is the creation of action-oriented research programs that improve life in cities. The second priority is fiscal sustainability for the Marron Institute and its programs. As of January 2019, the Marron Institute will have five faculty members leading major research programs that focus on environmental health, urban planning, urban data science, criminal justice, and public sector performance and innovation.

What We Offer

The faculty members who lead the NYU Marron Institute’s research programs receive renewable employment contracts, administrative support, and discretionary seed funding with which to build portfolios of sponsored research. To ensure that faculty members have maximum time to build their research programs, faculty appointments at the Marron Institute do not involve teaching commitments (though occasional course offerings are an option) or publication obligations.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct innovative applied research related to urban affairs.
  • Create, build, and direct a research program—piloting projects, hiring research staff, and crafting proposals as necessary to establish a portfolio of sponsored research projects.
  • Manage programmatic seed funding responsibly, striving for the fiscal sustainability of the research program by working with the administrative staff of the Institute and the University to develop gifts, apply for grants, and identify other sources of programmatic funding.
  • Contribute to the intellectual life of the Marron Institute and the University—presenting research, reacting to the work of others, and exploring opportunities for collaboration with faculty, researchers, and students elsewhere in the University and with other universities and organizations.

The Marron Institute is committed to New York University’s goal of achieving a more diverse and inclusive faculty.

Interested candidates should submit a CV and statement of proposed applied research via Interfolio. Applications may be addressed to Alexandra Wesnousky, Assistant Director, Marron Institute of Urban Management, 60 Fifth Avenue, 2nd Floor, New York, NY, 10011.

Submit an Application

The position will remain open until filled, it is preferred that applications be submitted before 12/31/2018.
