Civic Analytics Research Scientist and Lab Manager Bartosz Bończak; Director of Urban Expansion, Solly Angel; and Director of Civic Analytics, Constantine Kontokosta, published “Commuter Loss and Retention in US Employment Centers During COVID-19 and Its Aftermath” in Nature Cities. The authors analyzed changes in commuting patterns from 2019 to 2024 and the effects on work-related mobility activity in cities across the United States as a measure of local and regional economic resilience:
Although many central-city [economic centers] witnessed rapid recoveries over the study period, our findings indicate that some of the initial effects of the pandemic on commute patterns may be more durable, reinforced by a broader shift toward alternative work arrangements and a population migration away from higher-density urban cores. If this is the case, we may be witnessing an inflection point in the spatial structure of US cities, resulting in a further dispersal of places of work throughout metropolitan areas and regions and the subsequent emergence of new urban mobility networks.
This article was one of three submitted case studies as part of Bończak’s recent successful dissertation defense.
