The Sustaining Places initiative, together with the Japan Society and the New York City Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, cohosted New York City Planning Commission Chair Dan Garodnick and Jorge Almazán for a discussion of Almazán’s book Emergent Tokyo: Designing the Spontaneous City. The conversation explored questions such as: How does one design a “spontaneous city”? How can authentic and distinctive places be nurtured in giant cities like Tokyo and New York? What rules—or lack thereof—allow distinctive elements to emerge organically rather than being imposed from above?
