Research Scholar Isabel Coronado, representing the Family-Based Justice Center, hosted a webinar on April 13, providing an overview of family-based diversion and alternatives to incarceration. On “Why are we here?” Coronado said:
In the past...we’ve discussed the harmful impacts of incarceration, but never truly included the family component, much less the impacts on the children left behind when their parent or caregiver serves a jail or prison sentence....There are more children impacted by parental incarceration than there are incarcerated people. The system has been severely overlooking a critical population since the start of our justice system.
