SPD’s Before the Badge (BTB) is a first-of-kind relational-policing training program for new recruits that focuses on interpersonal relationships and wellness before recruits are trained on law-enforcement tactics. The aim is to improve how officers interact with the people they serve. The U.S. DOJ Office of Community Oriented Policing Services has funded BTB to facilitate meaningful dialogues between recruits and formerly incarcerated people, offer gender-responsiveness training, and educate on the history of policing. As a research partner of SPD, Litmus will conduct surveys of BTB participants, including recruits and community members, as part of evaluating the impact of BTB.
