Urban Densification in Practice
On May 13, the Urban Expansion program co-hosted its third session of the Anatomy of Density webinar series, “Urban Densification in Practice,” along with the journal, Buildings and Cities. This webinar focused on emerging practices aimed at making more room within existing footprints of cities to facilitate densification, while avoiding its pitfalls and confronting local resistance. Panelists presented case studies on Jinan (China), South Africa, Israel, and London. In his concluding remarks, Director of Urban Expansion, Solly Angel, said:
Government has a very critical role in promoting, allowing, and accelerating densification, and I think that these presentations begin to explain to government, particularly to municipal government, how they could both manage and encourage densification.
