Jonathan English

on the Reasons for Depressing US Train Stations

Transportation and Land Use Fellow Jonathan English features in the BBC video “Why do US Train Stations Look So Depressing?” He notes:

You generally don't want trains to have to pull in and pull out again. American stations, a lot of them, are built along the line so the trains come in, and then they continue out the other end as opposed to the famous stations in Europe, the vast majority are stub-end stations or terminal stations, where the trains pull in, and that track ends in the station. The problem with that is that it takes time to pull in and then turn around and go out the other way, and you also need specific types of trains to make that easy.
