Spring 2024 Civic Analytics Student Fellowship

The Civic Analytics Graduate Student Fellowship program invites applications for urban data science research assistantships at the NYU Marron Institute for Spring 2024. Graduate students (MS or PhD) with an interest in urban issues from all disciplines and programs across NYU are welcome to apply, and we seek a diversity of disciplinary training, backgrounds, and perspectives. The Fellowship projects are data-focused, so candidates with expertise in data science, machine learning, statistical modeling, spatial analysis, network analysis, and/or web development and interactive data visualization are particularly encouraged to apply.  

About the Civic Analytics Graduate Student Fellowship. Led by Director of Civic Analytics, Constantine Kontokosta, the Fellows, as part of the Civic Analytics Program at the Marron Institute, will work alongside researchers in the Urban Intelligence Lab on data analytics projects to address critical urban operational, policy, and planning issues and drive positive social impact. Fellows will work on research teams to utilize data analytics to provide new insight, knowledge, and opportunities for action. The positioning of the Fellowship program at the Marron Institute ensures that impact-driven projects are balanced with fundamental research advanced through widely-disseminated research that is transparent and reproducible. Fellows can expect  to: 

  • Work on one (or more) analytics research projects as part of the Civic Analytics research team,  including projects related to neighborhood change and social connectedness, data bias and fairness in algorithmic decision-making for urban management, and climate change and urban sustainability. 
  • Produce data tools, visualizations, models, and code using a range of data. 
  • Contribute, as appropriate, to conference and journal publications.  

Example qualifications: 

  • Experience with data scripting languages such as Python or R, and their statistical libraries.
  • Familiarity with GIS tools, such as ArcGIS, QGIS, GeoPandas, MapBox, Carto, etc.
  • Experience working with distributed file systems using Spark or PySpark. 
  • Web development experience (HTML, JavaScript, D3, React.js etc.). 
  • Data visualization experience using Matplotlib, Plotly, Tableau, etc. 
  • Practical experience exploring, extracting, and processing structured and unstructured open data sources. 
  • Background in various policy areas, including housing, climate, energy, transportation, or infrastructure, among others.  
  • Interest in issues related to social and environmental justice and social equity.
