On the Spatial Structure of the Covid-19 Pandemic
Some Scale and Density Effects
by
Shlomo (Solly) Angel
Director of Urban Expansion, Solly Angel, recently participated in a virtual panel, “How to Manage Urban Density Post-COVID-19?” co-hosted by the International Growth Centre and NYU Marron. The panelists had a wide-ranging discussion. On the topic of the public health premium versus public health advantage with respect to cities in a pandemic, Angel notes:
The issue in a pandemic is whether the city is more vulnerable to the pandemic because of its organization, because of the large numbers of people, because of the large density of contacts between them or does it have an advantage because it is better organized, it has better health services, it's easier to monitor and contact trace and have better hospitals. The issue has to be decided case-by-case.
