I think there are two things going on there. One is a profound shift of the burden of paying for college onto American families. Tuitions have risen, financial aid has not kept pace. There is more and more that is the responsibility of families, of students. The other thing that has happened is a change of attitude towards the value of a degree, especially given the cost on families, a real questioning of whether it will pay off, even as most statistics show that increasingly in America, you do need a college degree to succeed.
