The Urban Expansion program was in two events at the Twelfth Session of the World Urban Forum in Cairo, along with partners from the Cities Alliance, the African Urban Lab, and the Charter Cities Institute:

  1. Making Room for Urban Growth,” which explored innovative techniques that cities have used to manage rapid urban expansion. Session panelists included leaders from cities in Ethiopia and Uganda.
  2. Greenfield Visions,” which investigated a widespread but under-studied phenomenon: the emergence of new, private cities in Africa and whether they can address the land and housing constraints that impede full inclusion of many residents in the benefits of urbanization.
