How to Make Slums Viable Urban Communities
Director of Urban Expansion, Solly Angel, gave a presentation as part of the webinar “How Can We Transform Urban Slums into Urban Neighborhoods?” sponsored by FIABCI-Thai, the Thai chapter of the International Real Estate Federation. Angel argues:
...transforming urban slums into viable urban neighborhoods always hinges on understanding the specific conditions of the people living in the slums, because these conditions vary from place to place.
He further suggests that increased access to credit, secure land tenure, upgrading of infrastructure, properly laying out lands, connecting housing to jobs through reliable transportation, land-sharing schemes, and improving safety are possible solutions, incorporating examples from New York City, Kinshasa, Karachi, Guatemala City, Lima, Bangkok, Mumbai, and Rio de Janeiro.
