Director of Air Quality, Kevin Cromar, recently gave a virtual seminar at UC Merced discussing environmental justice and the health disparities associated with outdoor air pollution in the United States. The talk covered the evolution of environmental justice as part of environmental-policy development and examples of applying these principles at the local and federal levels. He shared insights from his research in Pittsburgh, which identified priority areas based on a combination of high exposure to ambient pollution and low access to work opportunities, estimated using methods derived from Senior Fellow Alain Bertaud’s mobility index. Addressing health inequalities from air pollution is a pressing issue that the Air Quality program will continue to address in the next several years.
